We have a number of programs available to help students who are interested in quality improvement grow their toolkit, sharpen their existing skills and gain new experiences.

The students of today are the quality improvement leaders of tomorrow. We’re proud to offer a unique range of programs for students, including the chance to build work experience through our summer student internship program and learn about the latest topics in quality improvement through special opportunities at the Quality Forum and on campus.

Our annual summer student internship program supports teams in health care organizations to hire a fully-funded intern to advance their projects aimed at improving the health care system, while building the capacity of future quality improvement leaders.

IHI Student Chapters

Are you a student interested in learning more about quality improvement? Get involved with your nearest IHI Open School Chapter and join a growing network of people learning about and striving for quality health care.

The Institute of Health Care Improvement (IHI) is an independent non-profit organization and a leader in health care improvement. For over 25 years, the IHI has worked to build improvement capability and achieve better patient safety and patient-centered care. A huge part of this community is the IHI Open School Chapters which are interprofessional groups of students who want to learn about and work in quality improvement. Each chapter is unique in what they offer from facilitating events, to conducting projects, to learning more about quality improvement through online IHI Open School courses. There are 930 Open School Chapters around the world, including in BC!

To join an active chapter in BC, check out these pages for UBC, UBCO, and UNBC. Otherwise, consider starting a chapter by recruiting some like-minded students and faculty support, and completing the online enrollment form on the IHI website. Chapter leads can find resources and community through the IHI website, however specific initiatives differ from chapter to chapter.

Scholarships

Every year, we offer health care improvement scholarships in partnership with the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School chapters at post-secondary schools in BC. Health care improvement scholarships are aimed at supporting exceptional students in pursuing educational opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in health care quality improvement. Specifically, the scholarship supports students interested in attending and/or presenting at high-calibre, inter-professional quality improvement conferences during the school year.
