Role Summary

Health Quality BC provides system-wide leadership to efforts designed to improve the quality of health care in British Columbia. Through collaborative partnerships with health authorities, patients, and those working within the health care system, we promote and inform a provincially-coordinated, patient-centred approach to quality.

This internship provides an opportunity for a motivated post-secondary student to support the Together Quality Improvement (tQI) team at Fraser Health Authority, in collaboration with the Clinical Quality and Patient Safety (CQPS) portfolio and acute site teams. The focus of this project will be on reducing key hospital-acquired conditions, including Hospital-Acquired Urinary Tract Infections (UTI), Sepsis, Pneumonia, and Delirium.

This work is closely aligned with Fraser Health’s initiatives on mobility, enhanced team-based rounds, and compassionate quality practice environments. The intern will gain hands-on experience in data analysis, quality improvement methodologies, and stakeholder engagement while supporting real-world initiatives to improve patient safety.

Key Accountabilities
  • Support data analysis and reporting related to hospital harm reduction priorities.
  • Assist in tracking and evaluating practice changes that impact hospital harm indicators.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, including Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles and iterative evaluation of interventions.
  • Develop sprint-style reports on hospital harm priorities for leadership teams.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to Quality of Care Committees and other stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and support the development of action plans.
  • Work with interdisciplinary teams to ensure alignment with Fraser Health’s Quality Management System (QMS) and quality domains.

Qualifications

Required:
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in data/statistical analysis and outcome interpretation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with diverse teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and presentations.
  • Attention to detail with the ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Interest in quality improvement, patient safety, and health system innovation.

You must be a current post-secondary student and located in British Columbia for the duration of the internship program (May 5 – August 22, 2025).

Preferred:
  • Understanding of hospital-acquired harm indicators and their impact on patient care.
  • Knowledge of health care system structures and collaborative team-based approaches.
  • Experience working with large datasets or health-related data systems.
Additional Information:
  • This is a hybrid position with work primarily based at Fraser Health’s Surrey-Central City Office, with potential site visits to acute care facilities as needed.
  • Work hours align with business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM).
  • All required equipment will be provided, but the intern must have a strong internet connection for virtual meetings and remote work.
