Role Summary

Health Quality BC provides system-wide leadership to efforts designed to improve the quality of health care in British Columbia. Through collaborative partnerships with health authorities, patients, and those working within the health care system, we promote and inform a provincially-coordinated, patient-centred approach to quality.

This internship provides an opportunity for a motivated post-secondary student to support the Hand Hygiene Peer Reviewer Program at Interior Health Authority. The Hand Hygiene Peer Reviewer Program program is designed to help meet Accreditation Canada’s Required Organizational Practice (ROP) on Improving Hand Hygiene Practices by implementing a peer review auditing system. The student intern will assist in developing educational materials, facilitating training sessions, and supporting data analysis to improve hand hygiene compliance across Interior Health facilities.

Key Accountabilities

  • Collaborate in developing a project charter and implementation strategy.
  • Assist in creating and delivering educational training sessions.
  • Organize and coordinate in-person and virtual training sessions for peer reviewers.
  •  Develop a Hand Hygiene Quality Improvement Toolkit to support leadership teams in identifying and addressing compliance gaps.
  •  Support real-time mentoring of peer reviewers and provide ongoing assistance in data collection and evaluation.
  • Analyze hand hygiene compliance data and prepare reports on program success and areas for improvement.
  • Participate in team meetings, contributing ideas for enhancing program sustainability and effectiveness.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the infection prevention and control working group.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and report on qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Basic knowledge of the health care system.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Basic knowledge of quality improvement methodology and project management principles.
  • Experience with data collection, analysis, and reporting on qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License – Required to operate a fleet vehicle for occasional travel to on-site meetings. A personal vehicle is not required but recommended for convenience when accessing fleet vehicle pickup locations.

You must be a current post-secondary student and located in British Columbia for the duration of the internship program (May 5 – August 22, 2025).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in curriculum development or training facilitation.
  • Familiarity with infection prevention and control practices in health care settings.
  • Understanding of hand hygiene best practices and compliance frameworks.
  • Knowledge of cultural safety and humility in health care environments.
Additional Information:
  • This is a hybrid position. The intern may work remotely but will need to attend in-person meetings and training sessions in Vernon, Kelowna, or surrounding areas as required.
  • Work hours are between Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
  • All required equipment will be provided, but the intern must have a strong internet connection for virtual meetings and remote work.
