June 6 is International “What Matters to You?” Day! Asking “What Matters to You?” can also be beneficial to the joy and engagement of health care providers!! We know engaged providers are a crucial component of person- and family-centred care and joy in work has a direct link to improved patient experience, productivity, work satisfaction and quality and safety within the health care system #WMTY

We love sharing stories about conversations which were started by asking, “What matters to you?” How did you feel when you were asked what matters or how did you change your approach after you learned what was important to a patient, family member or caregiver?

We would also love to hear stories about conversations that occurred amongst staff within health care organizations e.g., have leaders asked their staff what matters to them, have staff asked their co-workers? Asking this simple question is the premise of “What Matters to You?” Day, an international movement that encourages meaningful conversations between patients and their health care providers. Since its start in 2014 in Norway, “What Matters to You?” has opened up the discussion for patients’ hopes, dreams, goals and desires and has helped improve the patient experience in health care organizations in more than 40 countries.

  • Optimize therapeutic patient outcomes and activation in care
  • Increase quality and safety within the health care system
  • Strengthen relationships and trust between patients and health care providers
  • Contribute to joy in work for the recovery of health care providers

  • When a health care provider starts a conversation by asking what really matters it helps ensure care is aligned with patient priorities – because knowing what matters to your patient supports the right care at the right time, which can improve health outcomes

  • Health organizations can ask staff “What matters to you?” to better understand what’s important to them. When leadership takes the time to listen and do what matters, it increases engagement and promotes joy in work

  • It takes time to build trust, develop empathy and understand mutual perspectives for deeper and more meaningful conversations. We encourage patients to take a moment before a health care visit to reflect on what matters most and share it with their health care provider
